Fatima Bhutto

Fatima Bhutto is a Pakistani writer, journalist and novelist. She was born in Kabul and grew up in Syria and Pakistan.

Her previous books include the memoir Songs of Blood and Sword, the novel The Shadow of the Crescent Moon and The Runaways. Her writing often examines family, political power, violence, identity and displacement.

The story

The Hour of the Wolf is a memoir about grief, emotional abuse and recovery.

Fatima writes about the murder of her father, who was shot outside the family home when she was a teenager. As an adult, she enters a damaging relationship with a charismatic man who promises her the family life she wants.

The book follows her attempt to understand the relationship and leave it. Her Jack Russell terrier, Coco, remains beside her throughout this period.

Coco becomes central to Fatima’s recovery. Their relationship leads her to consider loyalty, motherhood, friendship and the responsibilities people have towards animals and the natural world.

Daunt Books Publishing

The Hour of the Wolf is published by Daunt Books Publishing, an independent British publisher connected to Daunt Books.

The publisher specialises in literary fiction, memoir, essays and translated writing. Its list includes contemporary authors alongside rediscovered works from the twentieth century.
