Klaus Kremmerz created the cover illustration for Wonderkin, a forthcoming speculative novel by American author Colin Winnette, published by Viking Books UK, part of Penguin Random House. The project brings together illustration, book cover design and art direction, with the final artwork presented alongside alternative concepts and original sketches.
Book Synopsis
Wonderkin is a speculative novel set in a near-future world shaped by repeated pandemics, artificial intelligence and increasingly lifelike humanoid machines. The story follows Charles, a father of twin boys, whose plans for their tenth birthday are interrupted by the arrival of Saul, a humanoid machine seeking his help.
As Charles and Saul embark on a journey together, the novel explores the boundaries between human identity and artificial intelligence, examining questions of fatherhood, family, technology and what it means to be human.
Combining speculative fiction with an examination of everyday relationships, Wonderkin considers how people navigate a world in which the distinction between human beings and machines is becoming increasingly uncertain.
Wonderkin is scheduled for publication by Viking Books UK on 22 April 2027.
About the Author: Colin Winnette
Colin Winnette is an American novelist whose work spans literary fiction, experimental writing and speculative fiction. His books include Users, The Job of the Wasp, Haints Stay and Coyote, demonstrating an interest in unconventional narratives, unsettling situations and the complexities of human behaviour.
His novel Users was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. Across his work, Winnette frequently explores the structures of everyday life through unusual premises and perspectives, bringing questions of identity, relationships and social behaviour into focus.
With Wonderkin, Winnette turns to a near-future setting in which artificial intelligence and humanoid machines intersect with the familiar responsibilities of family life. The novel continues his exploration of human experience through a speculative lens.
Book Cover Design and Illustration
For Wonderkin, Klaus Kremmerz created the cover illustration in collaboration with Colin Winnette, who led the design and art direction. The commission brings together the visual interpretation of a speculative novel and the practical requirements of contemporary book cover design.
The finished cover is shown here alongside alternative concepts and original sketches, documenting the development of the illustration and the different visual approaches explored during the creative process.
Klaus Kremmerz is represented by Dutch Uncle, an international artist management agency representing artists across illustration, animation, art and design. His work for Wonderkin forms part of the agency's wider portfolio of illustration commissions for publishing and editorial clients.
