ABOUT Helene Schjerfbeck
Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is a Finnish national symbol. From her early natural style- sharpened and improved during her studies in France - to her highly (thought about self-portraits, this exhibition will present Schjerfbeck for the first time to UK audiences.
Talented and widely travelled, Schjerfbeck found artistic success at a young age. In the 1880s she connected with artists' (groups of people or other living things) in Pont Aven, Brittany and St. Ives, Cornwall. In her later years, she left the Finnish capital for a quieter life that allowed her to focus mentally and physically on her work.
Keeping in touch with artist friends and the big changes in modern art, she produced some of her most raw abstract paintings in these years.
Through over 60 portraits, from wide views of nature scenes and still life, this long-overdue survey traces the change over time of her amazing and interesting career. Among the highlights will be a sequence of self-portraits, which show Schjerfbeck's lifelong fascination with the physical and mental process of getting older. In the age of the selfie, her engagement with masks and pretend/mask-wearing party - the shallow appearance we present to the world and what lies beneath - is more important and related than ever.
Ignored for too long, Schjerfbeck's world vision and artistic invention will be a new discovery for a lot of people.
