Simone Massoni x Criterion Collection : Trouble In Paradise
The Criterion Collection has built its reputation on careful restoration, sharp editorial framing, and cover art that treats cinema as a design problem worth solving. Each release sits at the intersection of film history and graphic culture, where a sleeve can signal tone, era, and attitude before the disc even spins.
For the new release of Trouble in Paradise, Criterion commissioned Simone Massoni to create the cover artwork. The film is defined by polish, timing, and flirtation, and Simone Massoni’s artwork aligns with the film’s reputation without leaning too hard on nostalgia.
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, Trouble in Paradise remains a study in elegance under pressure. It moves from Venice to Paris, from theft to romance, and from banter to seduction with no wasted motion.
We watched the film before Christmas and stayed glued through every scene. The dialogue is snappy…one line stayed with us: “In this world, money is the only thing that can buy respect.” OK!
A Strong Season for Criterion Covers
Simone Massoni’s cover arrives alongside a run of new Criterion releases with equally sharp visual identities:
Nightmare Alley — new cover by Thomas Ott
Network — new cover by Studio Maida
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure — new cover by Luigi Olivadoti
The Dead — new cover by Leanne Shapton
Playtime — (one of our all time favourite movies) with a new cover based on the original poster by René Ferracci
Together, they are a reminder that film packaging still matters.
