Timeless Essence: Javi Aznarez's Illustration Commemorating The Macallan's 200th Anniversary

In celebration of The Macallan’s 200th anniversary, Javi Aznárez was commissioned to create a large-scale illustration marking the milestone, a single image tasked with holding two centuries of history within a unified visual field.

Developed in collaboration with Xavi Homs at Potlatch Agency, the concept brings together 200 individual characters within one composition. Each figure operates as a fragment of time, a gesture, a presence, or a moment, collectively forming a dense but legible narrative structure. Rather than presenting history linearly, the image unfolds all at once, inviting the viewer to navigate it freely and discover connections across eras and details.

Javi approaches this complexity with his characteristic clarity and control. The composition balances visual density with precision, allowing the image to function at multiple scales. From a bold, immediate read at distance, it shifts into a slower, more intricate experience up close. Figures emerge gradually, with certain elements partially concealed within the scene, a deliberate strategy that introduces rhythm, pacing, and a subtle sense of play.

What could easily become overwhelming is instead resolved into a coherent system. The illustration operates not simply as a commemorative image, but as a constructed world that reflects the layered identity of The Macallan itself. Heritage is not treated as static or nostalgic, but as something active, evolving, and reinterpreted through a contemporary visual language.

The result is a richly composed visual narrative that bridges past and present, capturing the spirit of a brand at “200 Years Young” while demonstrating Javi’s ability to translate complex ideas into images of clarity, intelligence, and lasting impact.
