Gaku Nakagawa is a Kyoto-based illustrator and Buddhist monk whose work beautifully intertwines spirituality, observation, and everyday life. Born at Zuisenji Temple in Kyoto, where he continues to serve, Gaku studied Buddhist art at university before working as an advertising copywriter and later becoming a full-time illustrator in 1996. His art—graceful, witty, and deeply human—has appeared in Monocle, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Nikkei Asia, as well as in government publications, educational materials, and books.
Through projects such as Project Kyoto Love, a series capturing the “extremely private four seasons of Kyoto,” he brings a meditative sensibility to his depictions of modern Japanese life. One of the first Japanese artists represented by Dutch Uncle, Gaku’s work continues to resonate across cultures, balancing humor, precision, and quiet reflection.
