Illustrator Brian Rea returns to Barcelona this September for an exhibition and his first workshop in the city at Taller Fosforito, the illustration school and gallery in Gràcia.

The exhibition opens on 18 September 2026, launching Fosforito’s 2026–27 exhibition season. Brian then leads a 1.5-day workshop on 19 and 20 September.

Finding the Feelings

The workshop is called Finding the Feelings: Bringing Emotion to Your Work.

Brian will work with participants on recognising small moments from everyday life and translating them into visual stories.

The starting points can be awkward, funny, uncomfortable or personal. Drawing and storytelling are used to examine why a moment matters and how its emotional content can survive the move onto the page.

It is familiar territory for Brian. He has illustrated The New York Times’ Modern Love column for two decades, producing hundreds of images about relationships, families, separation, anxiety and affection.

His wider clients include The New Yorker, Apple, Penguin Books, Vanity Fair, Google and Herman Miller. Brian is also a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and teaches illustration at ArtCenter College of Design.

Feelings, in Brian’s case, are part of the job description. That gives the workshop a useful emotional line of enquiry.

Barcelona already forms part of Brian’s exhibition history.

His work has previously appeared at Fundació Joan Miró, including a large-scale mural installation.

His Fosforito exhibition provides another chance to see the work in the city, this time in a smaller illustration-focused setting.

About Taller Fosforito

Taller Fosforito was founded in Barcelona’s Gràcia neighbourhood by illustrators Iratxe López de Munáin and Miguel Pang. It operates as a school, exhibition space and meeting point for contemporary illustration, with workshops, talks and exhibitions forming its programme.
