Klaus Kremmerz created the front and back cover illustration for The Guardian Long Read, Volume Four, Summer 2026. The continuous illustration depicts a figure rowing beneath an umbrella across a vivid blue sea, set against a fluorescent yellow sky. Selected as SPD Cover of the Week, the design extends across both covers to create a unified visual identity for the magazine.
The illustration uses a limited colour palette, clean black outlines and simplified forms to create a distinctive piece of editorial illustration for one of The Guardian’s long-form journalism publications. Built around the movement of the tide, the composition connects the front and back covers through a single image.
The project was art directed by Suzanne Lemon, with creative direction by Chris Clarke and AJ Breuer and animation by Alex Purcell. Following publication, the cover design was featured in large-scale magazine display installations and shop-window takeovers across the UK, Europe and the US.
Inside the issue, Klaus’s illustrations accompany long-form journalism covering subjects including artificial intelligence in schools, British pub chains, Narendra Modi’s political influence and the writing of Helen Garner.
The project demonstrates Klaus’s approach to editorial illustration, combining graphic simplicity, visual storytelling and a strong concept to create artwork that works across magazine publishing, cover design and large-scale retail displays.
