Klaus Kremmerz Breathes New Life into French Cinema Classics in The Metrograph Magazine

The Metrograph Magazine’s latest bi-annual issue, designed by the acclaimed Matt Willey of Pentagram, is a tribute to the timeless appeal of 1930s and 1940s French cinema, presenting three iconic films from the era: Gueule d'amour(1937), Hôtel du Nord (1938), and L'Atalante (1934).

This beautifully crafted publication from New York City’s renowned art house cinema, The Metrograph, serves as an essential read for film aficionados, capturing the poetic realism of classic French storytelling.

A highlight of this issue is a series of evocative illustrations by Klaus Kremmerz, whose work captures the essence of these films in a way that breathes new life into each story.

Klaus’s illustrations draw readers into the romantic and tragic worlds of these French classics. Each illustration complements the narrative themes of longing, love, and despair that define the era's cinematic style.

The Pentagram team for this project includes Jonny Sikov, Nick Marabella, August Dine, and Huiting Lian, with David La Spina as Photography Director. This talented team, alongside other contributing artists, has brought a dynamic visual experience to the magazine.

Klaus’s work is among those of several skilled illustrators and photographers, such as Dror Cohen, Nathan Gelgud, Toma Vagner, Joana Avillez, John Pilson, Matt Dorfman, Maria Spann, Sara Messinger, and Marc J Palm. Simon Esterson and Holly Catford.

In Gueule d'amour, Klaus’s work reflects the turbulent romance of Lucien Bourrache and Madeleine, immersing readers in the dark shadows and emotional intricacies of Jean Grémillon’s story. His illustration for Hôtel du Nord channels Marcel Carné’s Paris with evocative detail, while L'Atalante is transformed through a poetic, dreamy rendering that mirrors Jean Vigo’s original vision.

This issue of The Metrograph magazine is a must-have, showcasing Klaus’s illustrations and a broader artistic collaboration that celebrates and preserves classic film culture.
