Javi Aznarez Animates “Momentitos” for Andes Origen

A play on screens and beers

Javi Aznarez has created a new animation titled Momentitos for Andes Origen, commissioned by New London.

The short piece focuses on the small interruptions that phones bring into social encounters and how beer can return attention back to the people in front of us.

The animation follows a playful exchange in Spanish. One character comments on the habit of “never not looking at the phone.”

Another interrupts with reminders that real life is present, and that perhaps it is time to set the phone down. The words are casual and clipped, spoken as if overheard at a bar table.

It’s suggested for the phone to be switched into airplane mode or else it will be tossed out of a window. Which it then is!

Javi Aznarez’s visual language

Javi Aznarez, known for his work on Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, applies his characteristic line work and exaggerated expressions to highlight the humor of distracted conversation.

The tone is comic but edged with recognition. Everyone has been on both sides of the scene—the distracted one and the friend calling attention back.

The animation keeps the raw texture of his line, avoiding polish that would soften the humor. The timing of the cuts aligns with the clipped dialogue, reinforcing the casual rhythm of bar talk.

The result is a short film that captures both a familiar irritation and a familiar pleasure: the clink of glasses, the reminder that conversation is better shared without a glowing screen between faces.
