Javi Aznarez: La Samaritaine Paris Campaign for Iconic Department Store

Javi Aznarez was commissioned to create a large-scale illustration campaign for La Samaritaine, one of Paris’s most iconic department stores. The project places his narrative illustration style within a major luxury retail environment.

Working across monumental formats, Javi constructs densely populated compositions that explore both the architecture of the building and the rhythms of Parisian life. The illustrations unfold as layered environments, where interior and exterior spaces merge, and narrative moments reveal themselves gradually across the surface.

Despite their complexity, the images retain a strong sense of clarity and control. Javi balances scale with precision, allowing each scene to function both as a bold graphic statement and as a detailed world that rewards closer attention. Subtle moments of humour and observation are embedded throughout, reinforcing his distinctive approach to narrative image-making.

Founded in 1870, La Samaritaine has long been associated with craftsmanship, elegance, and innovation. Javi’s illustrations respond directly to that legacy, translating it into a contemporary visual language that feels both rooted and forward-looking.

The project reflects a broader continuity within French visual culture, where illustration operates not simply as decoration, but as a form of storytelling embedded within public and commercial space. Here, that tradition is extended through a contemporary lens, resulting in a series that feels both timeless and distinctly of the present.
